After witnessing the trailer for the first time, I can put my hand on my heart and say, I think Benedict Cumberbatch is the best person fit for the role of Stephen Strange and here is why I think as such.
Doctor Strange is that egotistical rich guy who only cares about his wealth. He is the world’s greatest neurosurgeon by trade who has an accident which ends up wrecking his hands. He goes off on a journey of healing and comes across the world of mystic magic. Now from what we’ve seen of Benedict as our beloved Sherlock from the BBC Series, he can pull off that egotistical, ‘I am better than everybody else’ look very well. And let’s be honest, he’s British so he already has that wealthy part down. All British people seem wealthy as long as you dress them well and they’ve got the high-class accent.
The hands are an important asset in Doctor Strange as there is a lot of focus on them considering they’ll be heavily damaged from his accident and we all know Benedict has a great pair of hands and he loves showing them off.
Now I’m not saying Sherlock Holmes is similar to Stephen Strange, I’m just saying that Cumberbatch has the traits to pull it off considering how erratic of a character his Sherlock Holmes is shown to be.
Now Doctor Strange is all about mysticism and enters the world of magic and alternative dimensions following his accident. This works well with Benedict Cumberbatch who, you may not be aware, taught English in Tibetan Monestaries in Darjeeling, India in his gap year. He got in touch with spiritualism and mysticism in his time before stardom and has some experience in the field which is not something everybody can say. You could even say he was destined to play this role.
“I’m very excited about that spiritual dimension, obviously. It’s something that’s been a huge part of my life. I meditate a lot. That’s a huge tool in trying to calm myself, get away from the crazy circus of it all, have a focused mind as well as be a kinder, considerate person in the world. I took a lot of stuff away from my experience in Darjeeling… It was a profoundly formative experience at a very young age. It’s something I’ve tried to keep in my life.” – Benedict Cumberbatch (2015)
The role was so fitting the British star that Marvel kept returning to him as their preferred casting choice despite the scheduling difficulties he would provide. Cumberbatch even claimed he could not dedicate the time for the movie based on his scheduling conflicts but Marvel were willing to work to his schedule just to make this all work.
As we can see from the trailer, it was a great decision and I can already see success in the future of this movie. Don’t need any mysticism to make that prophecy.
This is cool. I had no idea that he spent that time in India teaching English. I also had no idea that Marvel kept coming back to him, but that does make sense. Glad they were able to work it out, it looks like it is going to be awesome. 😀
